ARISE SIR BIGOT: LGBT LABOUR CONDEMNS SOUTER HONOUR
LGBT Labour today condemned the granting of a knighthood to millionaire Stagecoach boss, Brian Souter. In 2000 the right-wing ideologue founded and funded ‘Keep the Clause’, a campaign against the abolition of the destructive and divisive Clause 2A law in Scotland (known as Section 28 in England & Wales). The abolition of Section 28 was a manifesto commitment of the last Labour government.
Souter, who has also made significant cash donations to the Scottish National Party, is granted the honour in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, released today.
James Asser Co-Chair of LGBT Labour, comments: “Souter’s bankrolling of the hateful Section 28 retention campaign in Scotland had a highly negative impact on the lives of countless LGBT Scots of all ages.
Honouring him in this way leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of equality campaigners across the UK and calls into question the Scottish and UK governments’ commitment to promoting a culture of acceptance and equality in our country.”
