LGBT Labour has today welcomed the Government’s decision to implement Labour’s ‘Alli Amendment’ (named for the Labour peer Lord Alli) with effect from December 5 2011.
Labour’s Alli amendment will allow the holding of civil partnerships in churches and other places of worship in England and Wales, where that institution wishes to perform such ceremonies. James Asser, Co-Chair of LGBT Labour commented: “We welcome the introduction of civil partnerships on religious premises. It’s absolutely right that those churches and faiths that wish to celebrate civil partnerships should be allowed to do so. This has been a long overdue change, following the amendment by Labour’s Lord Alli that was passed in the Equality Act before the last General Election.”
